Turning left at a controlled intersection

A controlled intersection can have a yield or stop sign, or traffic signals (traffic lights).

Remember: only one vehicle in the intersection on a left turn. Proceed into the intersection 1/3 and stop if there is on coming vehicles or pedestrians in the left adjacent crosswalk. Always keep your wheels straight until you are ready to make your turn, as your vehicle will continue to go straight if you are hit from behind by another vehicle.

A vehicle making a left turn must yield to oncoming vehicles and be vigilant for pedestrians walking in the crosswalk (left side of intersection).

Do not panic if the traffic signal turns amber and then red. The law states who ever is in the middle of the intersection has the right of way. Remember to always check for oncoming vehicles not stopping and running the red light before completing your left turn.
